Q
What happens when it’s cloudy?
A
Solros concentrates sunshine. So if there is no sunshine Solros will wait, and as soon as there is sunshine again Solros will deliver it to your room.
How does the system work?
Solros follows the sun, even when it is cloudy, and as soon as there is sunshine the Dish concentrates the sunshine into optical fibers in the cable. The optical fibers lead the light and when it arrives in your room the Lightbox distributes the light.
What to I need to install a Solros system?
1. You need to have somewhere with sunshine to place the Solros dish; roof, terrrace, yard, wall etc.
2. You need somewhere to place the Lightbox.
3. You need to have some basic skills in how to install a cable in your house or apartment. There is information available in our guides. Or you can find someone to help you with the installation here.
Can I buy a new cable if it turns out to be too short or long?
Yes – we will be selling cables individually at a reasonable price.
How is the system installed?
You place the Dish in a sunny spot, lead the cables into the room where you want the light. Mount cables in the Solros box. And turn the Solros on.
How long can the light be led?
The fibers attenuates the light so your actual light output will depend on the length of your optical fiber cable. The light is still great over 20 m with plastic fiber – and with glass fiber it can reach over 100 m with great effect!
What happens when the sun goes up?
So does Solros. As soon as the sun starts shining the Solros is there to catch the sunshine.
What happens during the night?
Nothing. Solros is sleeping.
What happens when the sun goes down or disappears behind clouds?
When the sun goes down or behind clouds Solros will go to its resting position and sleep, meaning it will use almost no power.
Glass fiber leads light better than plastic, why not use that instead?
In the future, most definitely! But: one of the problems we encountered was the cost of glass fiber, which few families or individuals could afford for their household and thus rendered the existing sunshine harvesting product very expensive. We realised that a normal house or apartment seldom have more than a few meters or maybe in some cases 10-15 meters from roof to room with bad natural light, which is why we offer plastic cable as an entry product to the world of Solros.
Can you use Solros to grow plants?
We are investigating exactly how efficient it is for growing plants, but according to a lot of people in the know, this is the future of indoor growing! We will update with our findings, but read more here for now.
How does Solros work in the winter?
Usually the ice or snow melts and falls of when the sun hits the disc. If it is really cold ( below -10 and weak sunshine) the snow and ice might not melt and you will get less sunshine than normal inside. There is no problem with the system following the sun though, that always works. If the system gets completely covered with snow so that it can not move it will still work as normal as soon as the snow melts or is removed.
Can the fibre cable be shortened by myself?
With the correct tools and training it is possible. The cables can be changed though – so if you try for example a 5m cable and it is to short you can take it out again and use a longer one, without having to remove the rest of the system.
How thick is the cable an whats the minimum bending radius of the cable?
The cable is 15 mm in diameter. We have set the minimum bend radius to 100 mm. A smaller radius is possible but the light starts to leak out in the bend and if bent to much it can be a problem.
How does the communication with the system via app work. Do i have to place the dish in distance of a wifi network?
At the moment you need to be close enough to your wifi network or directly to your phone. We are working on another solution as well, where you don't need wifi and can use a normal lamp switch, without any additional cables.
Can i turn the light off "like a lamp“ with or/and without the app, if I install the system in a room, where i want to sleep a bit longer e.g. at weekends?
You can turn the light on and off with the app and it will also possible to set a time when you want the light to go on. New functionalities are being added to the app as we develop it, and we will consider all good ideas that doesn't distort our timeline for production!
